Art is for happy things

I came late to learning how to create visual art. I deliberately chose to focus on happy subjects. My head is always filled with sadness, weariness, grief. . .I don’t want that on my canvas, too.

Last week I had a dream that was technically a nightmare: I woke up because I didn’t want to experience it anymore. One thing that stayed with me throughout the day was a figure that had glowing red eyes.

Too worked up to go to sleep that night, I decided to paint a representation of the dream:

It looks like a cave, but it’s not.

I’ve always liked the adage, “Art should disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturb.” My art choices live within that: I am the disturbed one, so I make art to comfort myself. I’m not sure what I’ll do with this one. Maybe I will cut it into bookmarks and send it to the wind.
